DERBY DAY

Today, the first Saturday in May, is Derby Day. If you are from Kentucky this is a huge event. The festival goes on for at least 2 weeks. There is a balloon race, a steamboat race, concerts, a parade, a Chuck wagon, parties and more. Oh, and there is that horse race. We usually don't celebrate because Marty blows glass on Saturdays and isn't at home. Today he was home because he was doing demos tonight. Guess what tomorrow's blog will be about. Anyway we watched the race together.
I got out two sterling Julep Cups, polished them, and Marty made the mint juleps. In my opinion this is a waste of good Bourbon. (we like our bourbon neat) The first one is so so, the second OK, the third is fabulous.

Picture from the TV. The call to post. Beautiful Churchill Downs. At this point Louisville had had nearly 2 inches of rain in less than 24 hours. But it never rains on the Derby. The sun came out and there were blue skies. But the track was really sloppy.

As they played "My Old Kentucky Home" we toasted.

Yes, I always cry when they sing "My Old Kentucky Home". Big toast back to Marty.

As they come out of the gate you can see the track is like a lake. Again from the TV.

Above is right before the finish line. Super Saver is ridden home by Calvin Borel. Borel rode the winner for the third time in four years. The only jockey ever to do that.
